Governors Ibikunle Amosun and Rochas Okorocha of Ogun and Imo states respectively have been thrown into a dilemma on how to approach the defeats suffered by their protégés in last weekend’s governorship elections.
Both men, who supported candidates against the choice of their party, All Progressives Congress, APC, for the governorship election, are in contemplation whether to endorse or back judicial challenges against the outcome of the polls.
Both men were as at yesterday, yet to congratulate the winners of the governorship election in their states.
They were also yet to endorse a judicial appeal against the declarations.
Prince Dapo Abiodun of APC won Ogun State governorship election as against the desire of Senator Amosun who backed Allied Peoples Movement, APM’s, Adekunle Akinlade as his successor.
Okorocha, on the other hand, backed Mr. Uche Nwosu, his son-in-law, as his successor, against the candidate of the APC, Senator Hope Uzodinma.
The Imo governorship election was, however, won by Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s Chief Emeka Ihedioha.
Neither Amosun nor Okorocha had at press time, yet to extend gestures to the winners of the election.
Press aides to the two men have also remained incommunicado.
On Monday, Governor Amosun went round Abeokuta on the inspection of projects during which he told Government House press crew that he remained committed to finishing the legacy projects initiated by his administration.
He said the loss would not affect his commitment to finishing his legacy projects, which he said President Muhammadu Buhari would commission before May 29.
The dilemma for the two outgoing governors, who have both been suspended from the party by National Working Committee, NWC, of the party is that should they act as bitter losers they could face further sanctions, especially after leaving office.
Amosun, one source said, also has to consider his alleged aspiration to get whatever it is that the party would offer in the Senate.
“As a ranking senator, Amosun is entitled to anything that the Senate offers, and he would not want to further alienate the party into pushing him away,” one political pundit said yesterday.
The scenario for Okorocha is even worse. His party, APC, lost the governorship election to PDP and his prospect of getting a Senate seat on the platform of the party hangs on the balance and could be left in the cold if he does anything to alienate his party further. (Vanguard)
