The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) on Monday announced that it has already surpassed revenue target for the year by depositing N1.1 trillion into the government coffers.

This was disclosed during an interaction with the maritime journalists at the Zone A Headquarters of the NCS in Yaba, Lagos.

According to the Public Relations Officer of the NCS, a Deputy Controller of Customs, Joseph Attah, he said the revenue beat the N1.03 trillion generated in 2017.

He however regretted that despite the efforts of the NCS to stop smuggling, some people still believed that it was as a way of life.

He listed porous border, non-cooperative attitude of some border dwellers, willingness to shield smugglers by some Nigerians and mob customs officers, unimplemented Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) protocol on transit by the neighboring countries and the use of animals and motor cycles to smuggle through difficult terrains by criminals as challenges confronting the customs.

Attah however said despite that, the “NCS has recorded 4,010 seizures with the duty paid value of over N40 billion. Outstanding among our seizures are arms, ammunitions, dangerous drugs, vehicles and rice”.

Further to that he said a total of 238,094 (50kg) bags of rice were seized between January and November 2018.

Last month, the NCS announced seizure of 59X40FT containers of tramadol and other controlled drugs from different commands ranging from 40 containers from Apapa port, 10 from Tin-can Port and another nine containers from PHII (Onne).

The Customs Spokesman added that through the Service’s platform 806 vehicles had been auctioned with 755 winners emerging from the process and N346, 146,349 was generated through the electronic platform.

He also disclosed that in line with directive of the federal government a total of 424,391 (50kg) bags of rice worth N4,047,615,000.00 and other seized perishable have been distributed the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who were victims of insurgency in the north east.

In other to ensure that the perishable material get to other needy homes, according to him, the customs Comptroller General of Customs, Colonel Hameed Ali (retired) has obtained permission from the Presidency to extend distribution of relief materials to other IDPs camps and other registered orphanages across the country.
