A woman, Kafiyat Suara has sought for the dissolution of her 13-year-old marriage to her husband, Mutiu Suara at Oja Oba/Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State. Kafayat alleged that her husband was troublesome and uncaring. He added that he was fond of beating her. She thus pleaded with the court to terminate their relationship and grant her custody of their two children.
“He loves to exert authority in the home but shirks his responsibilities. He believes he should be worshipped and dotted on. When he gives feeding allowance, he will want to know the number of pieces of meat in the pot and will monitor how we eat them.
“On some occasions, he will complain that the piece of meat I took is bigger than his and will end up beating me, “
she told the court.
“The only time he came to sleep in the last three years, he locked me and our children out for not meeting us at home. He refused to open the door despite explaining to him that we went for my nephew’s naming ceremony. He left us outside throughout the night, “she added.
“My lord, he refuses to give me money for my upkeep and has stopped me from working. The day I requested from him capital to start a trade, he nearly cut off my head.
“He told me a Muslim cleric told him I shouldn’t work until I reach the age of 70,
“she concluded.
The defendant failed to show up in court after being served a court hearing twice.
Giving his judgment after listening to the plaintiff and considering the fact that the defendant refused to show up in court, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade dissolved their marriage.
He gave custody of their two children to the plaintiff and ordered the defendant to be responsible for their upkeep. The defendant was mandated to pay N8, 000 monthly through the court as their children’s feeding allowance and be responsible for their education and health care.
