Miley Cyrus, American pop vocalist, has apologised for her derogatory and controversial comments about the hip-hop community.

In an interview with Billboard in 2017, the 26-year-old ‘Wrecking Ball’ singer, had blamed her fizzling out of the hip-hop genre on its sex-driven and materialistic tendencies. She was speaking on her 2013 album ‘Bangerz’.

Although Cyrus had registered her fondness for Kendrick Lamar’s track ‘Humble’, she said she was no longer interested in rap because of the materialistic and sex-driven messages.

“Too much Lamborghini. Got my Rolex. Got a girl on my cock. I am so not that and that’s what pushed me out of the hip-hop scene a little,” she had said.

Her comments had ignited widespread backlash from both fans and colleagues.

The artist was thereafter accused of appropriating and exploiting the hip-hop culture only to dismiss same when it no longer served her.

The singer had previously reacted to the wave of criticism in a since-deleted Instagram post, in which she suggested her words were taken out of context.

On Tuesday, she took to the comments section of a fan YouTube video to issue an apology in a lengthy message.

“I want to start with saying I am sorry. I own the fact that saying ‘this pushed me out of the hip hop scene a little’ was insensitive, as it is a privilege to have the ability to dip in and out of ‘the scene,” Cyrus wrote.

“There are decades of inequality that I am aware of, but still have alot [to] learn about. Silence is apart of the problem and I refuse to be quiet anymore. My words became a divider in a time where togetherness and unity is crucial.

“I can not change what I said at that time, but I can say I am deeply sorry for the disconnect my words caused. Simply said; I f***ed up and I sincerely apologize. I’m committed to using my voice for healing, change, and standing up for what’s right.”
