Police in Ekiti State have arrested a man for allegedly beheading his wife-to-be yesterday at Ilasa Ekiti in Ekiti East Local Government Area after she refused to visit him.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has plunged the community into mourning.
The lady was attacked by her fiancé when she went to the stream to fetch water with her younger sister.

It was learnt that the assailant ambushed the lady and cut off her head just as she bent to fetch water from the stream.

He was also alleged to have taken to his heels after cutting off the lady’s head. But he was later apprehended through information given by the deceased’s kid sister, who witnessed the murder.

According to some people in the community, including the traditional ruler, the Alasa of Ilasa, Oba Ajayi Omolagba, the young lady was given out as a future wife to the killer, while she was still a teenager in line with culture and tradition.

Trouble, however, started last month when the suspect requested the lady to spend the Eld-el-Fitri period with him.

The failure of the family of the lady to release her before, during and after the celebration angered the suspect. The suspect then assumed that the contract had been breached by family and thus hatched a plan to murder her.

Another version of the story claimed that the deceased, after growing up, observed that the supposed husband was a drunk and drug addict, she thereby voided the marriage arrangements.
Some relatives of the deceased, who craved anonymity, expressed sadness over the development.
They explained that the suspected murderer made a request to spend the Eld-el-Fitri with his wife-to-be and that the lady was supposed to go the following week before she was killed.

Speaking with journalists, Omolagba condemned the incident, stressing that the community had been in shock since the incident.

The monarch disclosed that he had summoned families of the deceased and suspect and their landlords. He said that there would be a meeting to resolve the issue and forestall future occurrence.
Omolagba noted that the community would also appease gods of the land as such incident was a taboo in the land.

The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Caleb Ikechukwu, while confirming the incident, said that investigation had commenced to unravel the cause of murder.
