In politics, there are no permanent friends or enemies but permanent interests.

This saying could not have been more true with the encounter between Hope Uzodinma, governor of Imo state, and Rochas Okorocha, senator representing Imo west.

A few months ago, both men were considered sworn enemies. The duo hardly missed any opportunity to hit each other as their supporters fought harder during the electioneering campaign.

Okorocha, then the incumbent governor, had thrown his weight behind Uche Nwosu, his son-in-law, as his successor. But Adams Oshiomhole, national chairman of the APC, preferred Uzodinma and the battle line was drawn.

Even after the election was over and Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was announced winner, the disagreement continued.

But when the supreme court sacked Ihedioha on Tuesday, Okorocha congratulated him and said he was ready to work with the new governor.

On Wednesday, both men shook hands and laughed out loud. Shortly after exchanging handshake with Okorocha, Uzodinma said in pidgin: “I don catch you na.”

Oshiomhole could not contain his joy as he sang: “We are reconciling; we are reuniting; as victory comes our way, we put the past behind.”

Uzodinma laughed, looked towards Okorocha’s direction before walking away.
