The Saudi Arabian team who were thrashed 5-0 in the opening match of the tournament and are scheduled to play Uruguay in their next fixture on Thursday, were on their way to the location of the match.

Videos shared on social media appeared to show an aircraft, that posters identified as the Saudi team’s plane with its wing on fire while it was in the air. Flames were seen from the engine, as the Russian Airlines Airbus was enroute to Rostov.

“The Saudi Arabia’s Football Federation wishes to reassure everyone about the safety of all members of the mission of the national team after a minor technical malfunction in an engine.

“The plane landed a few minutes ago at Rostov on Don Airport, and UNOMIG personnel are now safely heading to their residence,” an official statement read.

Still on World Cup reports, FIFA said Monday it had opened disciplinary proceedings against Mexico after supporters allegedly shouted a homophobic slur during the World Cup match against Germany.

The world football body gave no details of the nature of the insults but media reports said Mexican fans aimed the shouts at Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium. Mexico inflicted a shock 1-0 defeat on the World Cup holders in the match on Sunday.

FIFA took no action when the same chant was widely heard when Mexico played at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. It now takes a harder line and other Latin American teams have been fined for the same chant. Asked why, a spokesman told the Daily Telegraph:

“A public announcement was prepared, but the chants ceased.

“After the match, and as an important step for further action, the incident was duly included in the match report, as well as the evidence produced by the anti-discrimination observers.

“Based on those reports, Fifa’s disciplinary committee has opened proceedings against the Mexican FA.”
