Calabar Port has received a vessel –MV Yong Jin – laden with 11,800 metric tonnes of general cargo comprising heavy-duty trucks, buses, excavators, trucks and pipes. The Manager of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Calabar Port, Festus Olumati, confirmed this during a press conference in Calabar yesterday. According to him, the port is viable and open for business at all times contrary to reports. Olumati said the vessel arrived at the port from China on September 24. The manager said: “The length of the vessel is 190 meters. This is the second largest vessel we are receiving within the past three months.

“This goes to tell us that Calabar Port is viable and working. In line with our mandate, we are committed to making sure that this port is working effectively. “The berthing of this vessel has productively engaged many Cross River residents and others. The number of young people working here right now is quite large.” He said the port has a multiplier effect on the economy of the state because of its viability. MV Yong Jin Captain Jian Xin said he brought in the vessel from China Shipping Company through a legal channel.
