2023 Presidency: Melaye speaks on Tambuwal being ‘a traitor’ to his friend, Wike
As the 2023 election approaches, the spokesperson of the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Organisation, Senator Dino Melaye, has dismissed the impression that Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State is a traitor for stepping for the former Vice-President while his ally, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State was in the presidential race.
POLITICS NIGERIA recalls that during the presidential primary election of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in May, Governor Tambuwal stepped down for Atiku, a development that made many describe him as a traitor to his friend, Wike. But Melaye does not align with those thoughts.
“I don’t think Tambuwal is an employee of Governor Wike. They are friends. So, the issue of traitor or no traitor doesn’t arise,” Melaye told Punch in an interview published on Saturday.
“I don’t think there was an agreement between them. If there was any agreement, they would not be running for the same position.
“I also think what Tambuwal did was to take national interest above personal interest.
“It was his personal interest to become the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria through the instrumentality of the PDP. But he saw somebody, who he felt has more experience, more capacity and will give Nigerians more dividends of democracy than himself and he chose to align himself with national interest and dropped personal interest.”
