Nigeria’s crude oil production falls below OPEC quota, drops to 1.43mbpd in August

After meeting the crude oil production quota set by the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in January, June, and July 2025, Nigeria’s crude production took a hit in August 2025, dropping to 1.43 million barrels per day.
This is according to the Monthly Oil Market Report (MOMR) released by the oil cartel in Austria on Friday, September 12, 2025.
The report noted that the figure represents a 4.40 percent decline from 1.50 million bpd in the prior month.
According to the oil alliance, its production figures were derived from direct communication with Nigerian authorities.
With the current production level, the global oil organisation said Nigeria sustained its position as Africa’s leading oil producer, surpassing Libya, which recorded an output of 1.38 million bpd.
Also, OPEC said the country’s oil production in August fell below the country’s assigned quota of 1.5 million bpd — after two months of consecutively meeting the quota.
The oil cartel said data from secondary sources placed Nigeria’s crude production at 1.54 million bpd in August — a 0.15 percent drop from the 1.55 million bpd recorded in July.
Citing secondary sources, OPEC said “total DoC crude oil production averaged 42.40 mb/d in August 2025, which is 509 tb/d higher, m-o-m”.
