A viral video shared by The Benin Blogger has sparked fresh debate on the role of Nigeria’s leading church leaders in politics and governance, especially under Bola Tinubu.

In the 1 minute 48 second video, a cleric and activist, General Asabuja, accused Pastor Enoch Adeboye of the Redeemed Christian Church of God and Pastor Tunde Bakare of showing double standards in their treatment of successive governments.

“We saw what Pastor Adeboye did during Jonathan’s administration. They did not let him rest. They fought Goodluck Jonathan. Church people, General Overseer. God will judge you people,” he said.

He questioned why Adeboye and Bakare, who were vocal critics during Jonathan’s era, have remained silent under Bola Tinubu despite worsening poverty and insecurity.

“Adeboye no go see say, Tinubu no dey do well. Adeboye no go see say, the government no dey do well. Goodluck Jonathan time, una see wetin Adeboye do,” Asabuja declared.

The cleric went further to accuse the pastors of being complicit due to ethnic loyalty, saying: “Now, una no go talk. Because na una brother. Na una friend. Na una fellow Yoruba. Na una Oga dey for seat.”

Social media users joined the criticism, with one user, @Purehearted1214, writing: “Redeem Church is a den of criminals and phoney people masquerading as men of God. The likes of Dayo Israel, Oyedele the tax collector, the EFCC chairman, Oluremi Tinubu and many others… these are the characters running that enterprise called church.”

Another user, @OnlyCZA, added: “Take Adebayo and Tunde Bakere as Pastors at your own peril! These are just businessmen and political jobbers!”

The reactions highlight a growing public frustration over what many see as the silence of religious leaders in holding Tinubu’s government accountable, despite worsening hardship across the country.
