I’ll play in World Cup only if I can contribute – Messi
Inter Miami and Argentina forward, Lionel Messi, has shared his thoughts on a potential appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying he remains excited about the idea but will only take part if he feels physically capable of helping the Argentina national team.
According to Fabrizio Romano’s X post on Tuesday, Messi said, “I’m excited for the World Cup. But I don’t want to be a burden. I want to feel good physically, be sure that I can help and contribute things to the group. I will see day to day if I really feel good physically to be like I would like to be able to participate.”
Messi, who will turn 39 during the 2026 World Cup, led Argentina to their historic triumph in Qatar 2022, finally lifting the trophy that had eluded him throughout his illustrious career.
Since then, speculation has grown over whether the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will extend his international career long enough to defend the title in North America.
Despite moving to Major League Soccer in 2023, Messi has continued to represent Argentina in World Cup qualifying matches, maintaining strong performances that keep the door open for one last World Cup run.
For now, Messi’s focus remains on monitoring his physical condition and contributing to his club and country whenever he feels fully ready. His decision to participate in 2026 will ultimately depend on whether he can perform at the level both he and his team expect.(Punch)
