Treat Soldiers With Respect — Sen Ahmed Lawan Warns Amid Wike–Military Clash

Senator Ahmad Lawan has urged Nigerians to show greater respect to members of the armed forces, stressing that the nation must never take their sacrifices for granted.

The former senate president issued the warning on Thursday while addressing journalists at the State House.

Lawan’s comment comes as the country debates the recent clash between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and a naval officer, Lt. A.M. Yerima, over an alleged land matter in Abuja. The incident has drawn mixed reactions nationwide.

Speaking after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu, the former Senate President said military personnel “give their lives for the sake of this country” and deserve nothing less than honour from every citizen.

He noted that the welfare and dignity of soldiers must remain a national priority.

Lawan, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Defence, said he has seen the dedication of security forces firsthand and understands the level of risk they face daily.

According to him, the armed forces work under tough conditions and should not be subjected to disrespect from anyone.

He added that the federal government is investing heavily in security agencies, and Nigerians must complement those efforts by supporting those who defend the country.

On the expected 2026 Appropriation Bill, Lawan said there is “no cause for alarm.”
He explained that both the executive and the legislature are aligned on the importance of early budget passage and that the document will be treated promptly once submitted.

Lawan also used the visit to praise President Tinubu for what he described as courageous economic and security reforms.

He said the government’s actions in the last two years have stabilised the system and created room for growth, even though challenges still remain.

The Yobe Senator stated that he prefers to advise the President directly rather than criticise him publicly, noting that “constructive engagement” is more productive.

He described Tinubu as a leader who listens and responds when concerns are raised in good faith.

He assured his constituents and Nigerians that he will continue to advocate for better governance and stronger security, adding that supporting the administration’s success is part of his responsibility as a senior member of the ruling party.
