The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has condemned in strong terms the attack on a Government Girls School in the Maga community of Kebbi State, Northwest Nigeria, which led to the killing of the school’s Vice-Principal and the abduction of at least 25 students.

In a statement on Tuesday, the agency described the incident as a heartbreaking reminder of the rising threats facing children in conflict-affected regions of the country, stressing that no child should ever be harmed while simply trying to get an education.

“This tragic incident is yet another stark reminder of the urgent need to protect children, schools, and the personnel they rely upon to learn safely,” UNICEF said. “We stand with the affected community at this difficult time. Our heartfelt condolences go to those who have lost their loved ones, and we wish a full recovery for those injured.”

The organisation demanded the immediate and unconditional release of the abducted students, calling on security agencies and community actors to ensure their safe return.

UNICEF emphasized that students, education facilities, and school personnel are protected under international law from attacks of any kind, urging authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice in line with national and international standards.

The agency also reminded the Nigerian government of its commitment to the Safe Schools Declaration, which it endorsed in 2015. The declaration outlines key measures to safeguard the civilian nature of schools and ensure uninterrupted learning even in conflict situations.

UNICEF noted that it is working closely with government partners, civil society organisations, and local communities to strengthen child protection systems and promote safe, inclusive learning environments across the country. However, it stressed that these systems must be urgently reinforced to prevent further tragedies.
