I’m Happy Bode George Didn’t Celebrate 80th Birthday In Exile – Tinubu
President Bola Tinubu has expressed delight that former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olabode George, celebrated his 80th birthday in Lagos.
He spoke in response to a viral post prior to the 2023 general election where Chief George was quoted to have said he would go on exile if Tinubu, who was contesting as the presidential flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC), emerged as president.
However, speaking in Lagos during the celebration of the 80th birthday of George, the President described George as a patriotic and nation-building leader.
“He made a vow on national television that he would go into exile if I became President of Nigeria. I pleaded with him to have a child’s heart, because we would all remain in Nigeria and work together to achieve the peaceful and prosperous nation of our collective dreams,” he said.
At the event, George’s book titled: ‘Unfiltered’, was launched.
The president, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, revealed that George had been supportive since he assumed office.
“Since I became President, Chief George has been very gracious, offering advice and suggestions where necessary through many of his interventions on national issues. I find many of his suggestions very valuable and enriching,” he said.
He added that George remains a leader worthy of admiration despite their differing political affiliations.
“Politically, Chief Olabode George and I have been on opposite sides since 1999. But that has never diminished my admiration for him as a leader in Nigeria and in Lagos, our home state. I know the respect has always been mutual,” he said.(Daily trust)
