I have not endorsed any candidate for 2027 presidency – El-Rufai
Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has denied reports saying he stated which part of Nigeria should produce the president in 2027. He described the reports as fake news meant to deceive the public.
Social media posts had claimed that El-Rufai, now a leader in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), said it was the South’s turn to produce the next president and that he supported Peter Obi over Atiku Abubakar.
In a statement posted on Monday on his verified X (Twitter) account, El-Rufai said he never made such comments and warned Nigerians not to spread unverified information.
He said the claim was false, even though it had gone viral, and stressed that he did not say anything like that in any speech, interview, or social media post. He added that his views are only shared directly on his verified platforms.
El-Rufai also said it was wrong to attribute opinion articles written by other people to him, even if he shares those articles on his pages.
He criticized what he called irresponsible politics and the misuse of social media to spread false information. He urged journalists and the public to always verify information before sharing or publishing it.
According to him, society suffers when media professionals fail to check facts and instead support false stories circulating online.
He ended by saying that people should only believe statements that come directly from him on his official social media accounts or from interviews with respected media organizations.
