Terrorists Ambush Kwara Highway, Abduct Four Travellers in Early Morning Raid
Armed terrorists struck again in north-central Nigeria on Monday, ambushing motorists along the busy Isanlu–Isin–Omu Aran highway in Kwara State and abducting at least four travellers in the pre-dawn hours.
The attack occurred early Monday morning when the assailants, reportedly heavily armed, blocked the strategic road — a vital artery connecting communities in Kwara South senatorial district to the state capital, Ilorin.
Eyewitness accounts describe how the gunmen forced vehicles to halt before swiftly selecting and whisking away passengers to an unknown location.
A source familiar with the incident told journalists that the terrorists “operated freely” on the highway, highlighting the persistent presence of armed groups in the area who specifically target travellers heading toward Ilorin.
The brazen nature of the assault has sparked fresh panic among commuters and commercial drivers who rely on the route for daily travel.
This latest incident adds to a disturbing surge in kidnappings and banditry across Kwara State in recent months.
Just days earlier, communities in the same region were reeling from high-profile abductions, including attacks on traditional rulers and coordinated raids on villages.
Residents have repeatedly expressed frustration over the apparent inability of security forces to secure major highways and rural corridors, with some areas now considered high-risk zones.
As of late Monday afternoon, the Kwara State Police Command had not issued an official statement confirming the attack or providing details on any ongoing rescue operations.
When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer indicated she was yet to be fully briefed on the matter.
The highway ambush has intensified calls for urgent federal and state intervention, including sustained military patrols, enhanced intelligence gathering, and the establishment of permanent security checkpoints along vulnerable routes.
Community leaders and security analysts warn that without decisive action, such attacks risk becoming routine, further crippling economic activity and instilling widespread fear among residents.
Motorists are currently being advised to exercise extreme caution when using the Isanlu–Isin–Omu Aran road and to consider alternative routes where possible until the security situation improves.
The victims’ identities and current condition remain unknown, as frantic efforts by families and local authorities continue in the hope of securing their safe release.
Prayers and solidarity messages have poured in from across the state for the abducted travellers and their loved ones.
