BREAKING: Rivers assembly begins impeachment proceedings against Fubara
The Rivers State House of Assembly has commenced impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
The move was initiated during plenary on Thursday, with lawmakers accusing Fubara and his deputy of gross misconduct.
Speaker Martin Amaewhule is presiding over the session.
The development marks a renewed escalation of tensions between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
On December 5, 2025, a majority bloc of lawmakers led by Amaewhule defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Days later, Fubara also announced his defection from the PDP to the APC.
Despite the switches, political hostilities have simmered, with public sparring and underground power struggles between the two political heavyweights.
