Carrick, Solskjaer lead race for Man United caretaker job

Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer have emerged as the leading candidates to become Manchester United’s caretaker manager until the end of the season following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.

As reported by Sky Sports on Wednesday, the former United players have both previously managed the club, with Solskjaer enjoying a three-year spell as permanent manager after initially taking over on an interim basis in 2018, while Carrick had a brief three-match stint as caretaker in 2021.

“The pair are expected to hold face-to-face talks with United’s leadership, and the club has not ruled out the possibility of them working together,” Sky Sport reported.

Carrick was a key member of Solskjaer’s coaching staff during his time at Old Trafford, and their existing relationship is seen as a potential advantage during a turbulent period for the club.

Former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is also believed to be under consideration for the caretaker role.

In the short term, Darren Fletcher will continue as interim manager.
