She said the generator was allegedly left running in the parlour while the victims went to sleep.
According to her, investigations have commenced to fully ascertain the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
“The Rivers State Police Command is deeply saddened and currently investigating a tragic incident that occurred on January 11, 2026, at about 1500 hours in Ogale Eleme, where six members of a family were found dead in a locked room,” she said.
Iringe-Koko explained that the incident was reported by a family member.
“One Godwin Ogosu of Ogale Eleme reported through a distress call that his elder brother, wife, and children, who slept the previous night, had not woken up, with the doors still locked,” she said.
She added that operatives attached to the Eleme Police Division promptly responded.
“Operatives of the Command mobilised to the scene and forced open the door, where they discovered the lifeless bodies of the occupants,” she stated.
The deceased were identified as Theophilus Obele (49), Eunice Obele (35), Saka Obele (18), Peace Obele (14), Nyimenka Obele (7), and Abel Nwaka (25).
“Preliminary investigation suggests possible generator fume poisoning as the cause of death. The generator was reportedly left on in the parlour of the victims,” the police spokesperson said.
She disclosed that the bodies have been deposited at Last Home Mortuary, Ebubu Eleme, for autopsy, while photographic evidence has been documented.
Iringe-Koko further stated that the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
“The Commissioner of Police advised residents that when using generators, they should always be placed in well-ventilated outdoor areas, away from doors, windows, and vents, rather than in parlours, garages, or partially enclosed spaces, to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning,” she said.
“The Rivers State Police Command extends its heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims.”
