Two More Rivers Lawmakers Withdraw Support for Impeachment Move Against Fubara
Two more members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn their support for the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II, made the appeal, citing appeals from respected stakeholders within and outside the state as the reason for their change of heart.
This development is seen as a significant blow to the impeachment process, initiated by 26 lawmakers aligned with former Governor Nyesom Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. The lawmakers are urging their colleagues to reconsider their stance and explore alternative resolutions to the political crisis.
Nwakoh and Amadi have appealed to their colleagues to suspend the impeachment move, emphasizing the need for a humane approach. Governor Fubara has not received any formal notice of impeachment, despite the proceedings initiated by the lawmakers.
The Pan Niger Delta Elders Forum (PANDEF) has set up a reconciliation committee to mediate the crisis. The impeachment proceedings were initiated over alleged misconduct, with the lawmakers citing constitutional infringments by the governor and his deputy.
The situation remains fluid, with stakeholders calling for restraint and reconciliation to ensure peace and stability in Rivers State.
