Rivers Assembly Fails To Resume Plenary After Impeachment Notice Against Fubara
The Rivers State House of Assembly did not reconvene for plenary on Thursday, barely a week after issuing an impeachment notice against governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The House, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, had last Thursday, following the motion for the impeachment of the governor, adjourned plenary to reconvene on Thursday, January 15, to continue the impeachment proceedings.
The House had accused Governor Fubara and his deputy of eight counts of alleged gross misconduct, including the demolition of the state assembly complex and spending public funds without legislative approval, among other allegations.
As of Thursday afternoon, January 15, 2026, our correspondent observed that there were no indications that plenary would be held at the conference hall of the legislative quarters along Aba Road.
Although no official explanation was given by lawmakers for the failure to reconvene, nor was a new date announced for resumption, Daily Trust gathered that the development may be linked to divisions within the House, with some members reportedly opposing the impeachment move.
It was also gathered that Speaker Amaewhule may have cancelled the plenary amid widespread rumours in the state that lawmakers sympathetic to the governor were planning moves to remove him as speaker.
Efforts to reach the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Dr Eneme George, were unsuccessful, as calls to his phone were not answered and text messages sent to him had not been replied to as of the time of filing this report.
