Varsity Student Allegedly Commits Suicide After Losing N600,000 To Betting
A 300-level student of the Department of Computer Science at Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), Niger State, identified as Kelvin Danlami, has reportedly died by suicide after losing N600,000 to sports betting.
Sources disclosed that the money had been entrusted to the deceased, but he allegedly used it for gambling.
The body of the deceased was discovered in his room by a neighbor, who immediately alerted the authorities.
Speaking with Daily Trust, a fellow student said, “It is true that one of our fellow students took his life after mismanaging money entrusted to him for house rent due to gambling.”
The spokesperson for the Niger State Police Command, SP Wasiu Abiodun, also confirmed the incident to Daily Trust.
He said, “On January 19, 2026, at about 10:30 am, information was received indicating that in the early hours of the day, one Kelvin Danlami, a student of IBBUL, was found dead in his room.
“A neighbour who discovered the situation raised an alarm, and the victim was rushed to the General Hospital, Lapai, where he was confirmed dead. Police operatives attached to the Lapai Division visited the scene and conducted a preliminary investigation. The family of the deceased has been contacted. However, further investigation is ongoing to ascertain the exact circumstances behind his action.”
Aliyu Abubakar, the General Secretary of the Students Union Government (SUG) of the institution, also confirmed the incident, describing the event as a tragic loss for the university community. (Daily trust)
