Kunle Afolayan makes U-turn, says he’s seeking divorce to marry many wives
Kunle Afolayan, the Nigerian filmmaker, has advised men to marry multiple women, a stark reversal from his previously stated position on polygamy.
Speaking at a watch party for his latest film ‘Aníkúlápó: The Ghoul Awakens,’ Afolayan attributed his current view to his upbringing in a polygamous family.
In a video clip that has since gone viral, he revealed he is actively seeking a divorce, stating, “I am in and out of court seeking a divorce. I don’t mind the toll. So I can marry many wives now”.
He directly credited his personal and professional success to his late father’s choice to have multiple spouses.
“Without my father, there wouldn’t be a KAP Village or even Kunle Afolayan. I am the seventh child of my father because he had ten wives,” he said.
“For the men, marry many women, or rather be involved with many women. You know why?
“If my father didn’t, he would not have born me, and that is the honest truth. But today, a few of us are lifting his legacy.
“Life is short, death is constant. Nobody has life forever. Everybody has a period. Use your period.”
His remarks have drawn significant reactions online, with many noting the apparent contradiction in his stance.
The new endorsement of polygamy stands in direct opposition to his comments in a 2021 interview.
At that time, Afolayan stated he would not follow his father’s path, having witnessed the familial challenges it created.
According to him, his father had 25 children, and the family struggled to bond due to language and cultural differences.
“I would not want to marry many wives because my father had 10 wives, and I knew what happened throughout that period. I knew that really distracted my father. In this age, nobody needs to tell you before you know what’s right,” he said. (The Cable)
