Gunmen on Sunday evening attacked Dogon Ruwa community in the Bashar district of Wase Local Government Area, Plateau State, killing one resident and abducting an imam, his Muazzin (prayer caller), and six other persons.
Dogon Ruwa is one of the communities that have been suffering from banditry and kidnapping in recent time.
Residents said the victims were attacked on the outskirts of the community while engaged in charcoal production for commercial purposes.
Shapi’i Sambo, a youth leader in Wase, confirmed the incident, saying the attack has caused panic among locals.
Narrating the attack, Sambo said, “The victims were processing charcoal, when gunmen suddenly stormed the area. An Imam from Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’a Wa’ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), Malam Abdulrashid Baduku, and his Muezzin were among the victims.
“After the attack, residents trailed the attackers, but couldn’t catch them because it was evening. The attack has caused panic.
Sambo said security personnel had been stationed in the area, with additional forces deployed to strengthen security, urging residents to remain calm.
The state police spokesperson, SP Alabo Alfred, hadn’t responded to inquiries as of press time.
Meanwhile, the Dogon Ruwa community has witnessed previous attacks.
