The House of Representatives will reconvene on Tuesday, February 17, for an emergency sitting to deliberate on electoral matters arising from the recently announced timetable for the 2027 General Elections.

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Joash Amupitan, had on Friday announced February 20, 2027, for the presidential and National Assembly elections, and March 6, 2027, for governorship and state House of Assembly polls.

Addressing political parties, civil society organisations and journalists at the Commission’s headquarters in Abuja, Amupitan said the action was in line with constitutional provisions and Section 28(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, which mandates INEC to publish the notice not later than 360 days before the election.

The decision on the emergency sitting was conveyed to lawmakers through an internal memorandum issued by the Office of the Speaker late on Friday, underscoring the constitutional importance of the development and the need for urgent legislative attention.

The development was confirmed in a statement signed by Rep. Akin Rotimi Jr., Spokesman of the House of Representatives
