South African Police Arrest Late Former Zimbabwean President Mugabe’s Son In Johannesburg For Shooting Gardener
The South African police have arrested Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, son of Zimbabwe’s late former president, Robert Mugabe, following an alleged shooting incident at a luxury residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.
According to police authorities, the suspect was taken into custody after a 23-year-old man, believed to be a gardener working at the property, was allegedly shot during an incident that has now been classified as attempted murder.
Officers were seen combing the residence in the upscale Hyde Park neighbourhood of Johannesburg, searching for the firearm allegedly used in the attack. Investigators said the victim was rushed to hospital and remains in critical condition.
Police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, confirmed that two individuals were detained for questioning as detectives work to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Although authorities have not officially named those in custody, journalists at the scene reportedly saw Bellarmine Mugabe in handcuffs, and several local media outlets have identified him as the primary suspect.
Bellarmine Mugabe is the youngest son of Robert Mugabe and his second wife, Grace Mugabe. The late Zimbabwean leader ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years before being forced from power in 2017 at the age of 93. He died in 2019.
Robert Gabriel Mugabe (21 February 1924 – 6 September 2019) was a Zimbabwean revolutionary and longtime political leader who governed Zimbabwe from independence in 1980 until he was removed from power in 2017. He first served as the country’s Prime Minister from 1980 to 1987 before becoming President, a position he held for three decades until his ouster.
Mugabe also led the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) between 1975 and 1980 and later headed its successor party, the Zimbabwe African National Union–Patriotic Front (ZANU–PF), as First Secretary from 1980 to 2017.
Politically, he was known as an African nationalist; during the 1970s and 1980s he aligned with Marxist–Leninist ideology, later identifying as a socialist from the 1990s onward.(SaharaReporters)
