Cleric Declares For Sokoto Governorship Seat
A renown Islamic Scholar, Sheikh Bashir Ahmad Sani, has declared his interest to run for the Sokoto State governorship seat in the upcoming 2027 general election.
The cleric made this announcement at his 2026 Ramadan Tafsir in Sokoto, explaining that the intention to run for the seat was after an extensive tour of 65 villages across the state, where he said he received serious complaints from the resident about lack of basic amenities..
He said the communities are in dire need of urgent attention due to what he described as worsening insecurity and growing hardship among residents.
“For 22 years, we have been preaching peace and teaching the religion of Allah. We have never insulted anyone or engaged in political campaigns,” he said.
Sheikh Bashir accounts that his recent visitation has exposed him to a disturbing accounts from residents, including cases of abduction, sexual violence and extreme poverty allegedly perpetrated by bandits in some rural communities.
“In some villages, if you see how people are living, you will feel that even animals would be treated better. The suffering is unbearable,” he stated.
The scholar said he had long avoided politics despite being encouraged by associates and fellow clerics. According to him, the weight of leadership responsibility had always made him to ignore. (Daily trust)
