Naira stability a major win for Tinubu’s administration – Iyabo Obasanjo
Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo, has commended the President Bola Tinubu administration for its efforts in stabilising the naira.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, Iyabo described currency stabilisation as a significant positive development that enables better economic planning.
She said the steadier exchange rate has allowed businesses to forecast import costs and export revenues more reliably.
“I think there is a lot going on positively. One is the stabilisation of the naira. What that does is that people can predict how much money they will spend on imports and how much income they will get. So stabilisation of the naira is a big one,” she said.
Iyabo added that such predictability reduces volatility in pricing, supports investment, and strengthens overall economic confidence.
“The economic stability cannot be underestimated because when people can predict income and exports, things get better — you are not buying something at one price because of dollar instability and then having to sell at a higher price when it changes,” Iyabo said.
The former Nigerian senator, who recently declared her intention to contest the 2027 Ogun governorship election, praised the ongoing Lagos-Calabar coastal road project.
She said despite initial criticisms, the infrastructure initiative will deliver substantial long-term benefits.
“Although there was a lot of negativity around the road to Calabar, that will generate income in terms of ports. They will connect the two ports now to the other one. It will also ease transportation to the east in ways that we can’t even start to reckon with,” she said.
Iyabo pointed out that the project would help decongest the Lagos-Ibadan expressway corridor through Ogun, improve links to eastern Nigeria, and stimulate economic activity along the route by enhancing port connectivity between Lagos and Calabar.
In February, Iyabo confirmed she has joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogun state. (The Cable)
