Norway Jails Nigerian Player For Sexual Assault

A Nigerian player in Norway, Daniel Daga, has been convicted of sexual assault and handed a six months prison sentence.

The 19-year-old midfielder who is under contract with Molde was also ordered to pay NOK 100,000 as legal fees for the prosecutors.

Daga is an Under-20 international for Nigeria who prominently featured for the flying Eagles at the 2023 and 2025 World Cups.

He was accused of sexually assaulting a woman last year, but the midfielder has continued to maintain innocence.

Speaking though his lawyer Astrid Bolstad, Daga rejected the verdict, reiterating there was consent during the encounter with the victim.

“He is terribly sorry that the verdict was the way it was. He believes he is innocent and that everything happened with consent.”

Despite notification of appeal by his lawyer, Molde have removed Daga from the squad till further notice to allow completion of the legal process.

“Molde Football Club is aware of the verdict, which was published today on the mailing lists of Romsdal District Court.

“The player has, through his defense attorney, notified an appeal of the verdict. The case is therefore not final and will be processed further in the legal system.

“This is a very demanding matter for all involved. As an employer, Molde Football Club has a responsibility to look after our employees in a responsible manner, while at the same time having great respect for the seriousness of the matter and for the burdens this entails for all parties concerned.

“Based on the situation and the ongoing legal process, the club has decided that the player will not be part of the match squad until further notice.”
