EPL: West Ham draw deals blow to Man City title hopes as Arsenal go 9 points clear
Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham United in their English Premier League (EPL) match at the London Stadium on Saturday night.
Bernardo Silva and defender Konstantinos Mavropanos exchanged goals on a night the Cityzens saw their title bid take a hit, while West Ham United moved out of the relegation zone for the first time since December.
Silva put the visitors ahead in the 31st minute with a mishit cross to the far post that ended in the back of the net.
The lead lasted just four minutes as West Ham replied through a corner kick, Mavropanos rose highest to plant a header that hit the crossbar before crossing the line for 1-1.
Erling Haaland has not scored in his last three league matches, and his lack of form was evident when his effort was saved by Mads Hermansen, West Ham’s goalkeeper, while he scuffed his shot wide from inside the penalty area.
Matheus Nunes and Jeremy Doku both failed to find the target from promising positions, while Hermansen saved Ryan Cherki’s speculative effort and Rodi’s header as West Ham United claimed a point.
The draw snapped Man City’s four-match winning run. The Etihad side is on 61 points from 30 matches, nine points behind league leaders Arsenal, who defeated Everton 2-0 earlier in the day, and who have played a game more.
At the Emirates Stadium, Max Dowman became the youngest EPL goalscorer with the second goal in their two-goal victory.
In other matches, Chelsea fell to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge. The Blues have won just once in five league matches and remain joint-fifth on the table.
