Botswana Denies Hosting U.S. Military Base Amid Middle East Tensions, Iran’s Retaliatory Strikes
The Government of Botswana has dismissed claims circulating in sections of the media and political space alleging the presence of a United States military base at the Thebephatshwa Air Base, reaffirming that the facility remains under its full control.
In a press release issued on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, the Ministry for State President, Defence and Security stated that the government “wishes to address and correct misinformation circulating on various media and political discourse regarding Thebephatshwa Air Base.”
The statement categorically denied the reports, stressing that “Botswana does not host a United States military base.”
It added that “Thebephatshwa Air Base is a sovereign military installation owned, operated and controlled entirely by the Botswana Government through the Botswana Defence Force.”
According to the government, the air base serves key national objectives, including “enhancing emergency response capabilities, supporting regional peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts, and maintaining the operational readiness of our armed forces.”
While acknowledging the importance of public discourse, the government cautioned against the spread of unverified claims.
It noted that “robust debate on matters of national interest is both healthy and welcome in a democracy,” but warned that “it is important that discussions concerning national security are grounded in verified facts rather than speculation.”
The statement further highlighted the potential risks posed by false information, especially across borders.
It said, “Misinformation, particularly when amplified across borders, has the potential to create unnecessary misunderstanding among citizens and between neighbouring countries.”

Reaffirming its diplomatic stance, Botswana emphasized its commitment to maintaining cordial ties within the region.
“Botswana values its strong relationships with all its neighbours, and remains committed to regional cooperation, dialogue and mutual respect,” the statement read.
The government also called on stakeholders to exercise responsibility in public commentary, urging “all commentators, media outlets and political actors to verify facts before making public statements about Botswana’s defence posture.”
It added that “misinformation serves no one’s interests and undermines trust between nations.”
Reiterating its governance principles, the statement concluded that “the Government remains committed to transparency and accountability in all matters of public interest.”
The clarification comes amid concerns over reports that Botswana was hosting a United States military base and the implications of such an arrangement for the country.
It also comes against the backdrop of the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the United States and Israel, and retaliatory attacks on US bases and interests in the Middle East.
