The Senate on Tuesday mourned victims of recent attacks in Jos, Plateau State, and called for urgent security and humanitarian interventions.

It also directed the Inspector-General of Police to immediately launch an investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The resolutions followed a motion sponsored by Senator Diket Plang (APC, Plateau Central), who raised concerns over the attacks that have displaced many residents.

Plang noted that victims are in urgent need of humanitarian support and urged the Senate to mandate the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to provide food, medical supplies, and other relief materials.

The session, presided over by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, observed a minute’s silence in honour of the victims. The Senate also directed the military to establish bases in the affected communities to enhance security.

Additionally, lawmakers urged relevant government agencies to provide immediate assistance to those affected.

To prevent future attacks, the Senate called for increased recruitment into the police and other security agencies to strengthen manpower.

The chamber further resolved to send a high-powered delegation to the affected areas to sympathise with victims and assess the situation firsthand.

The resolutions come in the wake of an attack by gunmen on Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba district of Plateau Central, where several residents were killed.

Police authorities confirmed that at least 26 people lost their lives in the attack, while many others were displaced.
