2027: Gov Yusuf Woos Shekarau After Falling Out With Kwankwaso
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has intensified efforts to bring former governor of the state, Ibrahim Shekarau, back the All Progressives Congress (APC) as part of ongoing political realignments in the state.
The political calculation in Kano changed after Yusuf dumped the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) for the APC.
Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, National Leader of the NNPP, also dumped the party and moved to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Amid the realignments, Nasir Gawuna, who challenged Yusuf in the last Kano gubernatorial election, left the APC for ADC and was warmly welcomed by Kwankwaso, who personally witnessed his registration for the new party.
Upon his return from Abuja, Yusuf sent a strong message to the ADC camp, warning they would never win Kano.
Daily Trust gathered that the governor has been putting strategies in place to ensure he retains his seat post 2027.
He was said to have held a meeting with Shekarau in Abuja before returning to Kano.
A source close to Shekarau confirmed the meeting, describing it as part of wider consultations aimed at persuading the former governor to return to the APC.
During the visit, the governor was with the APC Chairman in Kano state, Umar Haruna Doguwa.
The governor’s visit is coming barely a week after Shekarau hinted at dumping the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), though he ruled out joining the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Shekarau, who previously served as Minister of Education, remains a respected elder statesman in the PDP and Kano politics. He is viewed as a potential game-changer.
For now, the two-term former governor has not publicly declared his position, but insiders suggest that negotiations are ongoing and that he may finally rejoin the APC. (Daily trust)
