‘Unforgettable and irreplaceable’ — Tinubu mourns soldiers killed in Borno terrorist attack
President Bola Tinubu has expressed “deep sorrow” over the killing of some soldiers by Boko Haram terrorists at a military base in Benisheikh, Borno state.
Suspected terrorists attacked the camp of the 29 Task Force Brigade, Operation HADIN KAI, in the early hours of Thursday, killing an unspecified number of military personnel.
According to Michael Onoja, director of defence media operations at the defence headquarters, the “coordinated terrorist attack” occurred at about 12:30 a.m.
In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, his special adviser on information and strategy, Tinubu extended condolences to the military and families of the fallen soldiers, urging them to remain strong in the face of the loss.
The president praised the troops’ courage, noting that they fought to repel the terrorists and prevent them from overrunning nearby communities.
“From the reports I have received, our armed forces have been conducting sustained land and air offensives against the insurgents, neutralising many of their fighters and commanders. The insurgents’ counterattack is a sign of desperation,” the statement reads.
“I extend my condolences to the families of our gallant soldiers, led by Brigadier-General Oseni Omoh Braimah, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of our country today in Borno State.
“The government will never forget their sacrifices. Their sacrifices will not be in vain. Because of the courage and dedication of our troops on the frontline, our resolve to defeat terrorism and all forms of violence across Nigeria is stronger than ever.
He further called on Nigerians and the media to back the military’s efforts against insurgency and banditry, warning against narratives that could undermine troop morale.
“These soldiers are our heroes – unforgettable and irreplaceable,” Tinubu said.
He assured that the government would continue to equip the armed forces and prioritise the welfare of personnel, while also extending condolences to the government and people of Borno State and pledging continued collaboration to achieve lasting peace.(TheCable)
