Kebbi Police launch statewide offensive after 44 killed in Shanga attacks
The Kebbi State Police Command has rolled out a sweeping statewide clearance operation in response to deadly attacks in Shanga Local Government Area that claimed 44 lives, authorities confirmed on Friday.
Police spokesperson, Bashir Usman, said in a statement issued in Birnin Kebbi Friday that the operation follows directives from the Inspector-General of Police to intensify efforts against banditry and other violent crimes across the state.
According to the Command, security forces responded promptly to coordinated assaults on multiple communities, including Gebe, Kalkami, Kawara, Kasoshi, Awaye, Tungar Rini, Binuwa and Dabe. Joint deployments involving the police and other security agencies have since restored relative calm in the affected areas, while investigations into the attacks are ongoing.
The statement noted that the clearance operation is focused on high-risk locations such as forests, farmlands, border communities and remote settlements. It involves coordinated patrols, intelligence-driven stop-and-search operations, and joint security missions aimed at flushing out criminal elements.
Police also reported the recovery of two AK-47 rifles along the Illo-Kamba axis, describing it as a significant breakthrough linked to intelligence-led policing efforts.
The Commissioner of Police in Kebbi State, CP Umar Hadejia, called on residents to remain vigilant and support security agencies by reporting suspicious movements and activities.
He further urged traditional rulers, community leaders, religious organisations and youth groups to provide credible and timely information to aid ongoing operations.
Authorities say the intensified security measures are part of broader efforts to restore peace and prevent further attacks in the state.
