Taraba Communities Call For Government’s Military Action As Residents Lament Several Deadly Bandits Attacks

Residents of Muri C in the Karim Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State have reported a series of attacks by bandits that resulted in deaths, injuries and displacement across affected communities.

SaharaReporters learnt from residents that the incidents occurred on April 7 and April 9, 2026, in Ligiri community, Andamin and Garau villages, according to accounts compiled from the area.

Local sources in a statement said the attacks have heightened insecurity, with some residents leaving their homes while others remain in the communities.

Describing the situation in the area, residents stated, “The people of Muri C in Karim Lamido Local Government Area are living through a nightmare — one marked by bloodshed, displacement, and a growing sense of abandonment. Yet, even in this darkness, there remains a flicker of courage: the brave soldiers on ground who continue to stand between these communities and total collapse.”

They further noted that the situation has exceeded current capacity, stating, “But courage alone is no longer enough.”

Providing details of the first incident, the residents said, “On April 7, 2026, bandits invaded Ligiri village in Andamin. One life was lost, several others were wounded —including a serving military officer — and homes and provision stores were mercilessly looted. The attackers left with a terrifying promise: they would return.”

They also gave an account of the second incident, stating, “Two days later, on April 9, that promise was fulfilled in the most tragic way. In Garau village, bandits ambushed soldiers returning from patrol alongside local vigilantes. One soldier was killed.

“Three vigilantes died instantly. Another, critically injured, later passed away at the General Hospital in Bambur. These are not isolated attacks—they are a pattern of terror.”

Commenting on the role of security personnel, the residents said, “The soldiers stationed in Garau and surrounding communities are doing a very good job.”

They elaborated on the efforts of the troops, stating, “They are fighting.”

“They are holding the line.”

“They are risking—and in some cases, paying with—their lives.”

They, however, pointed to operational limitations, stating, “But they are overstretched.”

They also described the conditions under which the attacks occurred, stating, “They are facing a larger, mobile, and well-coordinated enemy force operating from the borders of Bauchi State and Plateau State.

“The terrain around the Yankari Game Reserve is vast, mountainous, and dangerously porous — an environment that gives bandits a tactical advantage. Under these conditions, even the most committed and courageous soldiers cannot succeed alone. They need backup. Urgently.”

Calling for intervention, the residents said, “This is a direct appeal to the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Taraba State Government, the Nigerian Army, the Nigeria Police Force, and all security agencies: Do not let these sacrifices be in vain. Reinforce the troops on ground.

“Deploy additional personnel and equipment. Introduce aerial surveillance and modern tracking systems. Secure the borders and deny these criminals their hiding grounds. The soldiers are already doing their part. Now the system must do its own.”

They added that residents are seeking support, stating, “The people of Ligiri and Garau are not asking for miracles. They are asking for support—for the soldiers who protect them, and for themselves. They are asking for the chance to live without fear. Let this not be another cry that fades into silence.” (SaharaReporters)
