Kano APC stakeholders endorse Garo for deputy governor
Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano state have endorsed Murtala Garo as the frontrunner for the vacant deputy governorship position.
The endorsement followed a late-night strategy meeting held on Saturday.
Party sources said Garo secured about 90 per cent support from attendees, particularly from influential blocs within the party.
Alhassan Doguwa, a member of the house of representatives, urged Abba Yusuf, Kano state governor, to pick Garo as deputy governor.
“Garo is the most suitable candidate. He has remained consistent, patient, and loyal. This is the kind of support the governor needs at a critical time,” Doguwa said.
The move comes amid efforts to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Abdussalam Gwarzo.
Stakeholders had initially submitted three names, including Garo, Rabiu Bichi, and Kabiru Rurum.
However, deliberations reportedly tilted in favour of Garo, resulting in near-unanimous backing.
Prominent figures said to have endorsed Garo include Abdullahi Ganduje, former Kano governor; Abdullahi Tijjani Gwarzo, former deputy governor; Abubakar Kabir Bichi; Abdurrahman Sumaila, senator representing Kano south; Mariya Bunkure, minister of state, FCT; Garba Lado; Abdulkarim Zaura, former speaker of the Kano State Assembly; Hamisu Chidari; Abdulhamin Jibrin; and Abdullahi Rogo.
Party insiders said Garo’s political experience contributed to his endorsement.
They said his roles have included PDP organising secretary, special adviser, ALGON chairman, commissioner, and APC deputy governorship candidate in 2023.
Stakeholders said his lack of a current office makes him a seamless fit for the role, adding that his emergence could strengthen APC unity and stabilise Kano’s political landscape.
