Oyo Assembly dismisses impeachment rumours, backs Makinde
The Oyo State House of Assembly on Wednesday passed a unanimous vote of confidence in Governor Seyi Makinde and Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin, dismissing reports of an alleged impeachment plot in the state.
The resolution followed plenary in Ibadan, where lawmakers reaffirmed their support for both the executive and legislative leadership.
Moving the motion, the Majority Leader, Sanjo Adedoyin, described the rumours as baseless and politically motivated.
In his submission, he characterised the allegations as “baseless, distracting, and politically motivated.”
He said, “The Assembly remains united and committed to its constitutional responsibilities, and no formal communication or process suggesting impeachment had been initiated within the chamber.”
The lawmakers also noted recent political speculations, including claims linking Makinde, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, and some legislators to alleged plots against one another, describing them as unfounded.
There had earlier been public allegations by former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, suggesting political manoeuvres targeting the monarch, claims which have been denied by the state government and the palace.
At Wednesday’s sitting, Deputy Speaker Mohammed Fadeyi seconded the motion, describing the House as united and commending Makinde’s administration for its performance in infrastructure, education and healthcare.
The Chief Whip, Gbenga Oyekola, also distanced himself from claims of impeachment discussions, warning those behind the rumours to desist.
“There is no division in this House. We are focused on governance and delivering democratic dividends to the people of Oyo State through quality representation.
“The rumours making the rounds exist only in the realm of speculation and should be disregarded in their entirety by the public,” he said.
He added that the Assembly would not be influenced by any individual or group, and reaffirmed lawmakers’ support for Makinde and Ogundoyin.
