Obasanjo chairs panel as opposition leaders hold summit in Ibadan
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo will today, April 25, chair the National Summit of All Opposition Political Party Leaders in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
The event will hold at the Banquet Hall of the government house.
Hosted by Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo, the event will bring together leaders from major opposition parties under the theme ‘That We May Work Together for a United Opposition to Sustain Our Democracy’.
Organisers described the summit as a historic move aimed at forging a common front to address Nigeria’s pressing socio-economic and security challenges, while strengthening democratic institutions.
Chidi Odinkalu, former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC); and Usman Bugaje, a former member of the house of representatives; are expected to speak on the challenges of sustainable democracy and good governance in Nigeria.
Mike Igini, former resident electoral commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), will present a paper on ensuring free, fair and credible elections in Nigeria; while Pat Utomi, professor of political economy, will discuss building a productive, dynamic and efficient national economy for Nigeria.
Kabir Adamu, security and intelligence expert, will examine “the tragedy of widespread insecurity in Nigeria”.
The event is seen as a significant step by opposition figures towards building consensus and presenting a credible alternative ahead of future electoral cycles(TheCable)
