S’court ruling leaves PDP without leadership….. we’ve assumed control – Turaki Faction
The board of trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), backed by Kabiru Turaki, says it has assumed leadership of the party following the ruling of the supreme court, which invalidated the national convention held on November 15 and 16, 2025.
The convention produced Turaki as the national chairman of the party.
In a split judgement delivered on Thursday, three out of five justices of the apex court held that the appeal filed by the Turaki-led faction to validate the convention lacks merit.
Stephen Adah, who read the majority decision, held that the appellants violated a subsisting order of the federal high court, which restrained them from proceeding with the planned convention.
In a statement, Adolphus Wabara, chairman of the BoT faction backed by Turaki, said the board has assumed control of the party to prevent a leadership vacuum.
Wabara claimed that by implication of the supreme court ruling, the suspension of Samuel Anyanwu, Umar Bature, and Kamaldeen Ajibade—national secretary, national organising secretary, and national legal adviser, respectively—of the faction backed by Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has been upheld.
“The consequential invalidation of both the Abdulrahman Mohammed and Kabiru Tanimu Turaki-led Working Committees directly places the statutory onus of leadership of our great party on the shoulders of the Board of Trustees (BoT) as the Second Highest Organ of the Party, pursuant to the express and unambiguous provision of Section 32 (5) of the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017),” the statement reads.
“Against this backdrop, the BoT hereby immediately assumes responsibility of the national working leadership of the PDP as immediate constitutional remedial steps to foster genuine reconciliation, salvage, stabilise, and return the party to good political health.”
Wabara said an emergency meeting of the national executive committee (NEC) of the PDP will be summoned to appoint an interim national working committee to take charge of the party and ensure candidates are fielded for the upcoming general election.
