Kwara: PDP Picks Kale Kawu As Consensus Guber Candidate

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State has settled for Engr. Kale Kawu as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 general election.

The announcement followed days of consultation among party leaders and governorship aspirants led by former Senate President, Abubakar Bukola Saraki.

Insiders described the development as a calculated move to prevent internal divisions before the election cycle fully opens.

Saraki announced the choice of Kwale in a statement issued on Saturday, saying the party arrived at the choice after extensive meetings with stakeholders and aspirants.

“I am pleased to announce that, after extensive consultations with stakeholders of the Kwara PDP and our leading gubernatorial aspirants, we have arrived at a consensus candidate to fly the flag of our great party in the forthcoming gubernatorial election,” Saraki said.

He added that “That candidate is Engr. Kale Kawu.”

He commended the other aspirants for stepping down in support of the arrangement, describing their action as a demonstration of commitment to party unity and collective interest.

“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the other aspirants who, in the supreme interest of our party and state, have graciously stepped down to support this consensus,” he noted.

“It is this spirit of unity and selflessness that will carry us to victory.”

The announcement effectively ended weeks of political permutations within the opposition party over who would emerge as its governorship standard-bearer.

Before the decision, leading aspirants including Ali Ahmad, Omar Bolaji Gambari, Ladi Hassan and Olaseni Ibiwoye had publicly backed a consensus process and pledged support for whoever emerged.

Party sources said the PDP leadership was determined to avoid a bruising primary contest capable of reopening old cracks within its ranks, especially as the party prepares for what is expected to be a fierce battle for power in 2027.

Saraki also urged party members, delegates and supporters to ensure a peaceful process during the formal governorship primary scheduled for Sunday.

The emergence of Kawu came barely days after the ruling All Progressives Congress concluded its own controversial governorship process which produced the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly, Salihu Yakubu Danladi, as its flag-bearer.

The APC primary had been overshadowed by internal tensions, postponements and disagreements over the party’s consensus arrangement before Danladi eventually emerged as candidate after Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq threw his weight behind him.

The parallel adoption of consensus candidates by both major parties has now set the stage for what observers describe as an early two-horse race between the APC and PDP in Kwara.

Political analysts believe the PDP’s decision to close ranks around Kawu may strengthen the party’s internal stability ahead of the election, particularly after years of defections and factional disagreements that weakened its structure following its 2019 defeat.

For the APC, however, attention is expected to remain on how effectively the party manages grievances arising from its primary process and whether aggrieved aspirants and stakeholders will fully align behind Danladi before the campaign season intensifies.

The contest is also expected to test the continuing influence of Saraki’s political structure against the growing dominance of Governor AbdulRazaq’s camp, which has controlled the state since the “Otoge” political wave ended the PDP’s long reign in 2019.
