A chilling case of gender-based violence has thrown the Umulogho community in the Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State into mourning following the brutal gang-rape and murder of a 21-year-old nursing student, Wendy Chinwendu Achumba.

The primary suspect, a local ‘vulcanizer’ (tyre technician) identified as Onyema Okonkwo, alongside his fleeing accomplice, Emmanuel Onyekachi, cornered the victim inside her off-campus lodge at Umuadara Umulogho, where they reportedly took turns raping her before slitting her throat to cover up the crime.

Okonkwo, who was apprehended by aggrieved community youths before being handed over to the police, made a graphic, viral video confession detailing how the pre-planned assault turned into a gruesome homicide on Thursday night, May 21, 2026.

The victim, Chinwendu Achumba, was a student at the College of Nursing Sciences, Umulogho. On the night of the attack, she was completely alone in her apartment as her roommates had temporarily travelled out of the area for their mandatory clinical experience.

According to community sources, Okonkwo had repeatedly made romantic advances toward Achumba, all of which she firmly rejected. Bent on forcing himself on her, Okonkwo hatched a plan with his friend, Onyekachi.

Narrating the horrific incident at the local police station before his transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Owerri, on Saturday Okonkwo stated, “At about 7:00 p.m., me and my friend Emmanuel, I don’t know his surname, who is a phone charger, arrived at her lodge. We noticed nobody was around. We went straight to her room and asked her for sex, but she refused.

“Me and my friend had already planned together to seek her consent to have sexual intercourse, but unfortunately, when we made our intentions known, she refused. When she refused, we started forcing her.”

Okonkwo, who spoke in Igbo confessed that the 21-year-old student fought back ferociously to defend herself, leaving visible lacerations on his face. However, the two men eventually overpowered her.

“She injured my face with her nails. We later overpowered her and raped her. I had sex with her twice while my friend made three times with her,” Okonkwo callously recounted in the confessional video.

Fearing the immediate legal and social repercussions of their actions, and realizing that Achumba could easily identify them to the community and school authorities, the suspects resorted to murder.

“During the struggle, I struck her with a wooden object. She fell, and my friend carried a knife he saw around the house and slit her throat,” the suspect confessed.

After ensuring she was dead, the two men stole the victim’s mobile phone and fled the scene.

The gruesome discovery of Achumba’s body in a pool of her own blood triggered immediate outrage among the youths of the Umulogho community. Launching an aggressive, coordinated manhunt, the local youths tracked down Okonkwo, using the fresh scratch marks on his face as immediate physical evidence linking him to the struggle.

Following a brief interrogation by the community, Okonkwo was handed over to divisional police operatives, who have since transferred him to the SCID headquarters in Owerri for formal profiling and prosecution.

Imo State police intelligence teams have reportedly tracked and arrested the second suspect, Emmanuel Onyekachi. (SaharaReporters)
