JUST IN: Rivers APC guber candidate Kingsley Chinda resigns as reps minority leader
Kingsley Chinda, a member of the house of representatives, has resigned from his position as the minority leader.
Tajudeen Abbas, speaker of the house, read Chinda’s resignation letter during Tuesday’s plenary.
Abbas said the letter was dated April 23, 2026.
“It has been a profound honour and privilege to serve in this capacity, representing the collective interest of the minority caucus and contributing to the legislative work of the house,” the letter reads.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to work under your leadership and alongside distinguished colleagues in advancing democratic governance and national development.”
Chinda said he is “fully committed” to his duties as a member of the green chamber and will “continue to support the work of the legislature in every way possible”.
The lawmaker, who represents Obio/Akpor federal constituency of Rivers state, did not clarify whether he had also quit the PDP.
On May 21, Chinda, an ally of Nyesom Wike, minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), was elected as the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial candidate for Rivers state ahead of the 2027 elections.
The ranking lawmaker stirred controversy after appearing before the APC screening panel days before the party’s governorship primary, without formally announcing his defection to the ruling party.
On Monday, a faction of the APC in Rivers led by Emeka Beke declared the election of Chinda as null and void. (TheCable)
