Liverpool name Andoni Iraola as new head coach
Liverpool have announced Andoni Iraola, former Bournemouth manager, as the new head coach.
Iraola was announced by the Merseyside club on Thursday, filling the vacant role left after the dismissal of Arne Slot last week.
The length of contract was however not stated by the club who only revealed that the Basque-born coach will lead the Reds into the 2026/27 season.
Iraola arrives at Anfield after three successful years with Bournemouth whom he led to a historic sixth-place finish, and European football for the first time in the club’s history.
In his first words as Liverpool coach, the 43-year-old revealed that the chance to coach top players and win trophies lured him to the 20-time EPL winners.
“Really excited, really excited,” he said.
“Because obviously you know about Liverpool, you know that it’s a big club, a massive club, one of the biggest in the world.
“But feeling inside and understanding a little bit more of this club, I always thought it’s a special club.
“You don’t need a lot of things to get attracted by Liverpool. Liverpool is Liverpool.
“But obviously the atmosphere, the supporters, the club, the players, the chance for me to coach top-level players, the chance to fight for titles. I think it cannot be more attractive than this. It’s difficult to find it. So, really excited to start.”
Iraola will attempt to revive Liverpool, who tamely surrendered the EPL title to Arsenal in the just concluded season they accumulated only 60 points, their lowest in 10 years.
He has won only one trophy- the Cypriot Super Cup- in his six-year-old managerial career.
