Femi Majekodunmi, founder of FMA Architects Ltd, one of Nigeria’s leading architectural firms, is dead.

Majekodunmi died on Friday at the age of 86.

He was born on May 1, 1940, in London, England, to Moses Majekodunmi and Tomi Agbebi.

He spent his early years in the United Kingdom before moving to Nigeria, where he attended St. Gregory’s College, Lagos.

He later pursued a degree in architecture in the United Kingdom, first at the Glasgow School of Art and later at Kingston University (then Kingston College of Art), graduating in 1966.

After completing his studies, he gained professional experience with architectural firms in both the US and UK before returning to Nigeria in 1969.

On his return, he became part of a generation of architects who contributed to the development of modern architectural practice in the country.

In 1973, he founded Femi Majekodunmi Associates, which later evolved into FMA Architects Ltd, a firm that went on to establish a strong footprint in Nigeria’s commercial, institutional and public sector built environment.

Over the years, Majekodunmi’s work and practice helped influence the design direction of several urban and institutional projects, earning the firm a reputation within Nigeria’s architecture sector.

He was the first president and fellow of the Nigerian Institute of Architects, the first secretary of the African Union of Architects and a past president of the International Union of Architects.

He was also a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, and an associate professor of architecture at the University of Lagos. (TheCable)
