We Are Not Special Purpose Vehicle For Elections – NDC
The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to building a strong and enduring political institution, declaring that it will not operate as a personality-driven movement or a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for elections.
The position was contained in resolutions reached at the party’s second National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, where its leadership outlined measures aimed at strengthening internal governance, enforcing discipline and promoting accountability.
According to the party, the resolutions mark a deliberate effort to institutionalise its structures and ensure that the NDC evolves into a sustainable democratic platform capable of outlasting individual political ambitions.
A key decision of the NEC was the reaffirmation of the principle of party supremacy, with the leadership insisting that all programmes, policies and appointments—except personal staff appointments—by governments elected on the party’s platform must be undertaken in consultation with the party’s established structures.
The party stressed that elected officials are representatives of the collective will of the NDC and are therefore expected to align their actions with the party’s ideals and objectives.
“The party remains supreme, and members are expected to align their personal interests and agendas with those of the party,” the resolution stated.
The NEC further declared that the NDC is being deliberately built as a lasting institution rather than a personality cult, political movement or temporary electoral platform to be discarded after elections.
It urged members, aspirants and candidates at all levels to demonstrate unwavering commitment to the party’s growth and sustainability, adding that allegiance must always be to the party and the national interest.
To streamline its operations, the NEC resolved that all affiliated groups and non-governmental organisations operating under the NDC banner must function strictly under the guidance and control of the party and should no longer operate independently or maintain parallel structures.
The party said the decision was aimed at preventing fragmentation, ensuring unified messaging and strengthening organisational cohesion.
As part of efforts to entrench ethical standards, the NEC also approved the development of a comprehensive Code of Conduct for party officials and candidates.
A committee headed by the National Legal Adviser has been constituted to prepare the framework and detailed guidelines, which the party said would promote transparency, integrity and accountability.
In addition, the NEC inaugurated a National Reconciliation Committee to address grievances and foster unity among members, describing internal cohesion as essential to the party’s institutional strength and electoral prospects.
The party also announced measures to strengthen financial accountability, stating that all party funds must be used strictly for party business and managed with transparency.
It further directed that all monies sourced by candidates and aspirants, including campaign contributions, must be fully disclosed to the appropriate party organs at the local government, state, zonal and national levels.
The NDC said the resolutions collectively reflect its determination to prioritise strong institutions over personalities, accountability over expediency and unity over factional interests.
It added that the party is positioning itself as a disciplined and forward-looking organisation capable of providing Nigerians with a credible alternative and delivering good governance in the years ahead.
The statement was signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director.
