Portugal ends Super Eagles unbeaten run with 2-1 win
Nigeria’s 12-match unbeaten streak came to an end on Wednesday after Portugal claimed a 2-1 victory over the Super Eagles in an international friendly.
The two sides were locked in a closely contested encounter before Portugal broke the deadlock in the 74th minute through Pedro Neto.
The Super Eagles responded almost immediately, drawing level in the 82nd minute through Akor Adams.
The striker showed composure to finish from close range after being picked out by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
With the match seemingly heading for a draw, Portugal struck again to snatch victory. Juventus winger Francisco Conceição restored the hosts’ lead with a moment of brilliance, beating Nigeria defender Zaidu Sanusi before curling a precise left-footed effort from the edge of the area into the right corner.
Nigeria pushed for another equaliser in the closing stages but Portugal held firm to secure the win and bring the Super Eagles’ impressive unbeaten run to an end.
The defeat marked Nigeria’s first loss in 12 matches and ended a streak that had stretched across competitive and friendly fixtures.
Despite the setback, the game provided a memorable personal milestone for midfielder Alex Iwobi, who made his 100th appearance for the Super Eagles, becoming only the fourth Nigerian player to reach the century mark in international football.
Portugal’s victory will boost their confidence ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup where they are drawn in Group K along with DR Congo, Uzbekistan and Colombia.
