NSIB Retrieves Flight Recorders As Investigation Of Aircraft Landing On Delta Road Begins

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has recovered and secured the Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) and Flight Data Recorder (FDR) of the Bombardier Challenger CL-601 aircraft involved in a recent aviation incident near Asaba, Delta State, as investigations into the occurrence intensify.

The aircraft, with registration number N989BC and operated by VMO Aero Limited, reportedly landed and later departed from a roadway during a flight from Lagos to Asaba on June 10, 2026.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the NSIB said it activated its emergency response procedures immediately after receiving notification of the incident. The Bureau subsequently deployed its investigative “Go Team” to the site to commence a full-scale investigation.

According to the agency, the swift recovery of the aircraft’s Cockpit Voice Recorder and Flight Data Recorder marks a major step in determining the circumstances surrounding the unusual occurrence.

“The NSIB acted promptly following the occurrence on June 10, 2026. The immediate deployment of our investigative Go Team and the swift recovery of the Cockpit Voice Recorder and Flight Data Recorder are critical steps that will help establish the facts of this incident,” Director General of the NSIB, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., said.

He expressed relief that no fatalities or serious injuries were recorded, stressing that the Bureau’s primary focus remains the enhancement of aviation safety across Nigeria.

Beyond analysing the recovered flight recorders, investigators are also gathering operational, maintenance and air traffic control records connected to the flight. The investigation will further involve interviews with relevant personnel and a review of other available evidence.

The NSIB stated that it is working closely with relevant authorities and stakeholders in accordance with the Civil Aviation (Investigation of Air Accidents and Incidents) Regulations as well as the standards outlined in the International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO) Annex 13 framework governing aircraft accident and incident investigations.

The Bureau confirmed that appropriate notifications have been made to the relevant state authorities and other stakeholders as required by international aviation protocols.

The NSIB said further updates would be provided as significant developments emerge from the investigation.(daily trust)
