Iyabo Obasanjo Rejoins PDP
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s daughter, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo, has rejoined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), barely one week after announcing her defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Iyabo defected to the ruling party in January and declared her intention to contest the Ogun State governorship election.
Her defection marked a return to active politics after a 15-year absence.
The epidemiologist and former Ogun State Commissioner for Health lost her re-election bid in 2011 on the PDP platform to Senator Gbenga Obadara of the then Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
She subsequently returned to the United States to pursue her academic career, rising to the rank of professor.
Last Monday, Iyabo announced her resignation from the APC after losing the party’s governorship ticket.
She cited what she described as persistent disrespect, rejection, and maltreatment by the party’s leadership in Ogun State.
The former commissioner made a surprise appearance at the official unveiling of the PDP deputy governorship candidate at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta on Monday.
Upon her arrival, the party secretariat erupted in excitement as party leaders and members accorded her a rousing welcome.
Senator Obasanjo also participated in the unveiling of the deputy governorship candidate, Dr. Lateefat Kolapo-Sowunmi, by raising her hand alongside the party’s governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu, and the state chairman, Abayomi Tella.
Our correspondent learnt that Senator Obasanjo will officially rejoin the opposition party at a reception scheduled for Tuesday.
